Inexpensive Ideas For Spending Time Together As A Family

My hubby has Fridays off, so naturally we call them Family Friday :). Usually I get to go grocery shopping by myself (yay!), which isn’t totally family oriented, but it does give my hubby and son some time alone together. After that, we try to do some fun family activities. Here are some ideas for family fun.

Pick fruit – During the summer we like to go to a local u-pick farm to stock up on blueberries and peaches. We get to walk around together, picking out what we want to take home, while sampling some along the way.

Go to a pet store – My son loves looking at all of the animals, especially the fish. It’s fun for us to just stand back and watch him marvel at all of them.

Read – My hubby likes to take time out of the day to read a story to our son. It’s really nice family bonding time.

Go to a park – You can let your kids run around to get out all of their energy. Push them on the swings, catch them as they come down the slide, and run around with them.

Go on a day trip – Go anywhere within about 1.5 hours of you for a fun day trip. For us that can include the beach, the zoo, an indoor play place, or the shops on the other side of the bridge (we live on a peninsula).

Watch Netflix – We don’t have cable, so we rely on Netflix for much of our television and movie viewing. It makes for a fun rainy day family activity, a sleepy Saturday morning activity, or a nice movie night in. Some days during the summer it’s just way too hot and humid to go out. I’m a bit of an air conditioning gal ;) My son can get a bit cranky if he’s cooped up inside for too long. Enter Netflix. We can sit down and watch an episode of Bo On The Go or the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally movie.

Netflix

I put this one on the list, not only because we enjoy watching together as a family, but also because it’s super inexpensive – only $7.99 a month. Some families like going to the movies together, but I honestly prefer just watching one on Netflix. Can you imagine having to pay for 4 people to see a movie, when you could just watch one on Netflix for much less than that?

I love that they have a dedicated Children and Family section, so we know we are only getting wholesome shows and movies. We always watch on either our tv (through our Wii) or on our iPad. In addition to working via a Wii and iPad, Netflix also works on smartphones, tablets, laptops, Smart TVs, Sony PlayStation, and Microsoft Xbox.

One of the best parts is the mobility of it. A few weeks ago my son and I were stuck at an airport with a long flight delay. We were able to use the airport’s free wifi to watch Jake And The Neverland Pirates on Netflix. It really helped the time fly by.

Besides the shows I mentioned, we also like watching just about anything from the Little Kids and the Animated sections. As I’m looking through Netflix, I notice that they recently added some new shows we can watch together like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and some new Leap Frog movies. I also noticed that they recently added some new categories including Family Movie Night, Are We There Yet, and TV for Curious Kids. So many options!

  1. Family time doesn’t have to cost much. When our daughter was little for a special treat we would go on family walks to the neighborhood ice cream shop. I have fond memories as a child playing games with the whole family and some of the neighbor kids in our yard. The key for me is intentional, focused time together.

    • You’ll probably love it! There’s a lot of stuff I wish they carried, but overall they have a ton to choose from.
