Long Term Care - What Is It And Why Is It Helpful?

My pregnancy was a mess. At the beginning of my second trimester I got really sick from vertigo and ended up in the hospital. They said it was dehydration, kept me overnight for fluids, then sent me home. I was sick at home for about 3 more weeks. I felt a little better for a week, then it hit me hard. I couldn’t move, I had to crawl to the bathroom. It was bad. I was hospitalized for 8 days. Being in the hospital was uncomfortable, to say the least. Being pregnant and very sick, all I really wanted was the comforts of home.

The nurses and doctors took good care of me, but I still didn’t really like it there. They had to check my vitals and draw blood constantly, so I was never getting any more than a few hours of sleep at a time. Finally I was released, but Home Health had to come see me every day for about 10 more days. Even though I still couldn’t really move on my own, being at home was much more comfortable. It was really nice having someone come to my home to take care of me. {Turns out I had Meniere’s Disease and not dehydration.}

All my life I’ve been prone to illness and injury, so it really wouldn’t surprise me if I needed extra help in my old age. My pregnancy experience got me to thinking – would I prefer to be in a nursing home and/or hospital, or would I prefer to stay in my home? I think I would prefer to stay in my home, but being cared for at home is just so expensive. The New York Times recently published an article titled “Buyers of Long-Term Care Insurance Prefer Home Care“, which basically echoes my sentiment. Additionally, I have two grandparents who prefer home care for their long-term care needs versus being in a home or a hospital.

After doing some research, I found some information from Genworth Financial about paying for home care via Long Term Care Insurance. I know, I know, adding another insurance to the list can be overwhelming, but I can’t help but wonder if it might be worth it.

  1. With aging parents, it is so important to look into long term care! I really need to investigate the options.
