Tips To Help Kids Sleep Through The Night

My son has always been a pretty poor sleeper. When he was a newborn, he would only take naps in 30 minute increments. As he grew, it became increasingly difficult to get him to go to bed before midnight. We finally got his bedtime up to a decent hour, but then couldn’t get him to sleep through the night. It wasn’t until he was about 2.5 years old that he began sleeping through the night. Even now, he’ll wake up and call for me about once or twice a month. His sleeping habits have gotten a lot better than what they used to be, so let me share some of what we’ve learned along the way.

Temperature – If the temperature wasn’t right, he would have trouble sleeping. In the Winter I will sometimes put socks on him to keep his feet warm. In the Summer I will run a fan.

Noise – My son apparently likes noise when he sleeps. It seriously took me 2 years to figure this out. We bought him a noise machine that had several different types of sounds to choose from (his favorite was the heartbeat), and his sleeping got 50% better. That noise machine ended up breaking, so now we just use a fan. We know the noise works because if we forget to turn it on, he’ll yell out that he wants noise.

Routine – Set up a special bed time routine. Give them a 15 minute warning for bed time. Clean up toys. Getting in pj’s. Brush teeth. Sing a song or read a story. Hop in bed. Get tucked in. Gives hugs. Say goodnight.

Consistency – Make sure you are consistent with how you run bed time every night. If you sing a song at bed time, make sure you do that every night.

Time – Setting time boundaries has been the most crucial thing for his sleeping so far. He has a consistent bedtime (he’ll go to bed later on special occasions, but otherwise it’s the same time every night), and he’s not allowed to come out of his room until a certain time. The going to bed part was easy for us to keep up with because we could just check the time. The waking up part was more difficult, though. Some mornings he would come into our room at 5am, some mornings it was 8am. Finally, the solution was a ZAZOO KiDS photo clock. Hello consistency and goodbye 5am wake-ups!

Tips To Help Kids Sleep Through The Night

ZAZOO KiDS makes photo clocks that help young children learn to develop better sleep habits. I’m able to use pre-programmed images (or personalized photo or noise options) set to an alarm time. This can be silent so that it doesn’t actually wake my son up. The screen gives him visual cues when it’s time to get out of bed.

So this is how it works: I set the clock’s photo alarm for 6:45pm (my son’s bed time), and at 6:45pm the screen gets dark and shows a moon. I also set the clock’s photo alarm for 7am (the time my son is allowed to come out of his room), and at 7am the screen gets light and shows a sun. If you remember, I mentioned that before using the photo clock my son would wake up any time between 5 and 8am. Since using this photo clock, the earliest my son has woken up is 6:45am, but 95% of the time he wakes up at exactly 7am or a little bit later.

The clock has given him consistency in his sleep routine, and I love it. When he gets out of bed in the mornings, he announces that the sun has risen and it’s time to get up. It’s the cutest thing! I think it’s great that he understands what’s going on.

Some of the other features of the photo clock include a rotating photo frame, music, audio book, and more! Using a USB cord, you can connect the clock to your computer and upload photos, music, and books to it. The clock also comes with 11-songs built right into the memory. Kids can listen out of the clock’s built-in speakers or via headphones.

So here’s a quick break down of the ZAZOO KiDS Photo Clock – it’s a clock, digital photo frame, sound system, audio book player, and alarm clock all in one. You can use the photos and music that are already pre-programmed in, or you can upload your own. You can show the date, the time, or words like night and day. You can set a photo alarm, a music alarm, or a traditional alarm. You can personalize it with your child’s name. And, the clock is great for children of all ages, not just those who need help sleeping.

ZAZOO KiDS is giving away a photo clock to one of my readers, valued at $89.99! This giveaway is open to residents of the US. ENTER HERE.

    • Good luck! I have trouble staying asleep (and I've been practicing for 29 years), so I don't blame kids who have trouble sleeping, but as a sleep deprived parent, it's still frustrating!

  3. A white noise machine really helped my son sleep better. Great suggestions!

  4. That’s a great clock! Sound machines are a must here! We had one for my son immediately, because his head was at the wall next to stairs.

I can’t imagine a baby only sleeping 30 minutes at a exhausted you must’ve been!!

    • It was pretty tiring because I could never nap when he did. Every time I would start to fall asleep, he would wake back up :-p

As some other readers have mentioned, my son uses a sound machine as well. He doesn’t like the white noise setting as much, but enjoys the rain, brook, and beach sounds. I favor the water sounds as well :)

Fav feature is that you can personalize or customize it
