Apple Pie Brownies Recipe {grain, dairy, egg, and refined sugar-free}

This is a really weird sounding recipe and combination, so bear with me. I found a recipe on Fast Paleo for Apple Brownies while searching for apple recipes. I think apples dipped in chocolate (think chocolate fondue) is super tasty, which make me think this crazy concoction of a recipe might actually work. The Fast Paleo recipe didn’t work for my allergies, so I adapted it to get this Apple Pie Brownie recipe. So strange, it just might taste good!

These brownies are Paleo and free of grains, eggs, dairy, and refined sugar. My final verdict on them is that they’re really not terrible like I thought they might be. It took me about 3 bites to get used to the flavor combination and then I actually liked it. I even wanted a second piece! They’re not overly sweet, so you could could eat it as a breakfast bar with some almond butter, or put some ice cream on top and eat it as dessert.

Apple Pie Brownies Recipe {grain, dairy, egg, and refined sugar-free}

2 cups almond flour

¼ cup cacao powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ tablespoon cinnamon

⅛ teaspoon sea salt

½ cup chopped pecans

2 tablespoons ground flaxseed + 6 tablespoons water, mixed and rested for a few minutes

1 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract

⅓ cup maple syrup or apple “honey”

½ cup applesauce – nothing but apples is preferred

½ cup apple juice – nothing but apples is preferred

This recipe isn’t overly sweet, so if you like sweet brownies you can probably add about 2 tablespoons of maple syrup and 2 tablespoons of either coconut flour or arrowroot powder to the existing ingredients above. I haven’t tried this, though.

Making It:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine all of the dry ingredients, then add in the wet and stir to combine.
  3. Put into a greased 8×11 baking dish.
  4. Bake for about 20-25 minutes.
